1) SUPPORT SRWA for GIVING TUESDAY
givingtuesday-banner 2

Today is GIVING TUESDAY! The idea behind Giving Tuesday is truly grand. Thanksgiving is for giving thanks, Black Friday is for getting deals, and Giving TUESDAY is for giving back.

Just as the Lorax spoke for the trees, we, you, all of us must speak up for our beautiful Soque River! Giving back to her can come in many shapes and sizes. Of course, financial support of the SRWA's programs is one way, and a very important way to make sure that conservation of the river and surrounding resources is considered by our entire community.

We've also tried very hard in recent years to come up with OTHER WAYS (hopefully in addition to financial support) that our community can give back to the SOQUE RIVER. Here are just a few and we hope you may share with us your own ideas:
  • Share your story, photos and artwork of the River - We've met a whole new group of individuals through our SOQUEE RIVER DAYS project to collect people's experiences with the Soque Watershed. By sharing your own story you'll help demonstrate how important this resource is to our community identity. See submissions and make your own at http://soqueriverdays.blogspot.com
  • PLANT TREES -  Rivers run best when they are surrounded by green things. Planting trees is an investment in the future health of the river. See our Tree Sale below.
  • COMPOST - This is a new one for us to recommend. YOU can turn red soils brown and stop erosion by composting organic matter. Make a commitment this year to compost your food scraps, your leaves, your grass clippings and then spread the decomposed material anywhere that you see bare soil. Altogether, composting could (and slowly is) changing the landscape of our watershed.

As you consider how you can GIVE BACK to the SOQUE, feel free check out these additional TWELVE REASONS TO SUPPORT THE SRWA. If you'd like to make a donation today, click on the Soque Lover Santa and we thank you for your support of our efforts!

2) SRWA's 3rd Annual Tree Sale
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

- Joyce Kilmer

If you have the same fondness in your heart for trees as the poet Joyce Kilmer, or if you are more practical about it and simply realize that trees are useful around your home, your farm, or your business, we ecourage you to purchase and plant some native trees this year at the SRWA's 3rd Annual Tree Sale. Trees can be purchased ONLINE Now through January 2nd (JUST 30 DAYS LEFT), for pickup on Friday, January 9th from 3-6pm at the Mauldin House in Clarkesville. Check out our Ordering Form by clicking on the link.

Trees are nature's restoration tools. They create topsoil, allow rainfall to soak into the ground, cool our urban environments, clean the air, provide oxygen, hold streambanks in place, and increase property values. Overall they improve our natural environments more than any other tool. The SRWA believes that planting trees is the single best gift we can give back to the land.

Nineteen varieties of larger container trees are also available in one, three and seven gallon sizes for $7, $9 and $28 each.

2) SOQUE Christmas Party - BEER TASTING - December 12th
Beer_Tasting_2014

YOU are invited to ATTEND the 5th annual Soque Christmas Party,  BEER TASTING and POTLUCK. The SRWA hosts the biggest and best beer tasting in Habersham County each year and we're continuing the tradition at a new location.

If you haven't attended before here's what you need to know:
  • The new LOCATION is 333 Old Clarkesville Mill Road. Located in the Soque Village subdivision behind Old Clarkesville Mill. Just drive through the gates and look for the signs. Thanks to Walter and Laura for being our hosts!
  • EVERYONE is INVITED - We do encourage all attendees to join the SRWA as a member if you are not already. However, everyone is invited, especially friends and loved ones who love good beer. Don't be shy. Never been to an SRWA event? What are you waiting for? RSVP to soque@windstream.net, since we may have to cap the party at 50.
  • BRING A DISH - If you'd like to munch on something please bring a tasty dish for the potluck. Healthy alternatives encouraged. Cakes, cookies, cheeses, soups, meatballs, whole roasted chicken, and drinks are all good too.
  • BRING TWO BEERS - To enter the tasting you must bring at least 2x 12ounce bottles or cans of beer per person or one 22 ounce bomber sized beer. They should be the same beer so that once the first one is gone it can be replaced with the second one.
  • BRING YOUR OWN GLASS - We'll have plastic cups but who wants to drink beer from one of those?
  • HOW IT WORKS - Since we're trying to discover wonderful beers, do some research and travel if needed to find something really special to enter in the TASTING CONTEST. Fortunately the selection is getting better and better all the time (Betty's up in Helen has good choices including Growlers). Your beers will be competing with all other beers entered. The best beer of the night will win a prize. All beers will be placed in a paper bag with a number on it. By using the blind taste test method we're forced to overcome our biases against breweries we think stink. Everyone will have a scorecard, and you'll score each beer tasted. At the end of the night we'll have everyone vote on their top 3 beers, then fill in the board showing the names of every beer. It's fun!
  • Party starts at 6pm and will end around 9pm....maybe.
  • RSVP if you can to soque@windstream.net and let us know what you might bring for the potluck too.
Hope to see you there!

1) 2014 Soque Fall Celebration at Habersham Mills - Saturday, October 25
SAVE_THE_DATE_600

The SRWA has gained a good reputation over the years for throwing a GREAT party on the river every now and then. We think this should be one of our best! The 2014 FALL SOQUE CELEBRATION on Saturday, October 25th at 6:30pm will be held at the recently restored and revitalized Historic Habersham Mill. The Mill, the shoals and the whole area is one of the most notable landmarks on the River and the recent and beautiful restorations have brought the facility back into splendid use.

We're priveleged to be able to showcase this venue! Some of the other highlights of the evening are an EXHIBIT of all of our submissions to the SOQUEE RIVER DAYS project. Excerpts from over 40 submissions of artwork, stories, histories and other EXPERIENCES on the Soque will be on display including works by local artists (most notably many of John Kollock's images of the Soque), and historical photographs. See below for more details.

DINNER will be a Carribbean style feast from genuine Carribean chef Gaby Riche! Jerk Chicken, Spicy Pork, rice, cabbage, beans, cornbread and more. Perfect for riverside dining! And no Soque Party is complete without lots of craft beer and wine.

Our SILENT AUCTION will feature dozens of items including river-themed local art, pottery, fishing gear, and always some unexpected surprises from Weekend Get-Aways to Medical Procedures!! If YOU have an ITEM you'd like to DONATE, we'd love to feature it in the Silent Auction or our BUCKET RAFFLE which returns this year where $5 gives you a chance to win from a wide array of great items.

It's a guaranteed GOOD TIME on the river, for a GOOD CAUSE, with some GOOD PEOPLE. Tickets are $35 per person and are on sale NOW through our online ordering sytem.

No hardcopy ticket needed. However, in another week we'll have good old traditional tickets for sale in the office. Don't delay. Venue is limited to 150 attendees (last year was sold out!)

We're also seeking volunteers for the event, so if you'd like to come for a discounted ticket price and put in a few hours of work let us know by contacting Scarlett
 Fuller at soque_scarlett@windstream.net.

Put it on your calendars, buy your tickets, and come join us for a grand time on the RIVER!

2) Fall event to feature Soquee River Days artwork, history and more
One of the highlights of our event at the Mill will be an artistic, historical and human interest exhibit of all the submissions to our SOQUEE RIVER DAYS project, an effort in honor of John Kollock and his ability to inspire our love of place and the beauty of our natural resources. This project strives to collect EVERYONE'S stories, photos, interesting occurences, art, poetry, artwork, spoken word remembrances or anything at all that captures YOUR experience with the SOQUE WATERSHED. We hope to have at least 100 entries and know that YOU have something to share.....like.....

HERE'S MINE
The first time I went canoeing on the Soquee, on Memorial Day weekend in 2003, I didn't see a single living soul the entire trip. I did see kingfishers, a beaver family, canada geese, and a rainstorm that made each water drop invert into the sunshine when it plopped in the river. I also went skinny dipping and caught a catfish. At the end I rode my bike back up Pea Ridge Road to Cannon Bridge to complete the sensation of paddling and biking the entire lower section of the river, not to mention that great feeling of self sufficiency. That trip (and others like it) permanently bound my heart to this "one of a kind" river.

Soquee* River Days - submission deadline EXTENDED
(*yes that spelling is correct...check the blog site for an explanation)

The Soquee River Days project has been extended through the end of the 2014 to December 31st.  With 40 submissions made thus far we LOVE hearing YOUR stories and experiences on the Soque and throughout the watershed.

To encourage YOU GOOD FOLKS to continue sharing YOUR Soque stories with us we have added a new twist… weekly prizes donated by local businesses like Hanner's Outfitters, Copper Pot, Tuckers, Splashe Studio and Java Joes.  Each week, our staff and board picks their favorite overall entry to receive a prize and their submission is also published in the Wednesday edition of the Northeast Georgian.  If you own a local business and would like to donate a prize we are still looking for a few more weeks to cover through the end of the year.  Please email Scarlett Fuller @ soque_scarlett@windstream.net or call 706-754-9382.

You can view all submissions on the Soquee River Days blog site -
http://soqueriverdays.blogspot.com/
Each weekly winner is announced on our FACEBOOK page -
https://www.facebook.com/soqueriverlover

No submission is too insignificant!  EVERYONE including YOU has a SOQUE STORY, PHOTO or ARTWORK to share so please don't be shy. We'd like to have at 100 submissions by the end of the year. Maybe you took a photo of a unique flower, or a turtle crossing the road. Perhaps you snuck up on a bear cub, or ate a slice of watermelon sitting on a rock. Any memory that you think helps represent your experience and your love of the Soque Watershed is a valid submission. A great nugget we received this month was an old saying by a grandmother that went like this,

"use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

This simple but powerful memory paints a beautiful picture of what it meant to live off the land here in Northeast Georgia 100 years ago.

All Submissions will receive a free SOQUE RIVER MAP. We ask that you come by our office to pick those up. The best submissions will receive a cash prize and print of John Kollock's Soque River Days painting to be awarded at the end of the year.

Check it out today and make a submission. At the completion we plan to produce a BOOK that describes how our community experiences the Soque Watershed!

3) Rivers Alive Clean-Up in Clarkesville - Saturday, October 4th
Mark your calendars for a River CLEAN-UP on the Soque River, or one of the many tributaries that drain to the Soque in Clarkesville. We'll meet up at PITTS PARK in Clarkesville, and either split into two groups, or after cleaning that area head on over to Rocky Branch which drains everything from the post-office and Ingles all the way down to the Clarkesville Greenway where we just completed our streambank restoration. When we do that part of the clean-up we may also bust up some beaver activity that's been wrecking havoc on that stream as well. And we'll also be right next to the sight of the Clarkesville Greenway expansion into Mary Street Park.

We'll start at 9am. Let us know if you can come by sending Duncan an e-mail (
dhughes@northgatech.edu).  We'll have free t-shirts the day of the event while they last.

Hope to see you in a few weeks.

4) Clarkesville Green Infrastructure Grant underway
PRIORITY_SITES_(9.2014)
The City of Clarkesville with the assistance of the SRWA has been taking some giant strides towards incorporating green infrastructure into the city's management for the last several years as evidenced by: a stormwater bioretention feature built in front of North Georgia Floors, a stormwater inventory documenting improvements needed for stormwater infrastructure, and most recently a mini-streambank restoration at the Clarkesville Greenway.

Building on these successes the City received a GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE grant from the US EPA earlier this year to help identify 10 priority sites for improving stormwater management by increasing infiltration and treatment and reducing stormwater volumes. The process provides technical assistance in both identifying opportunities for stormwater enhancements, and developing plans, budgets and justifications to aid in future grants to slowly implement improvements all across the city.

This type of long-term planning is expected to have a long-term impact in how stormwater and stormwater infrastructure will be built and managed in the future. Part of the process will include looking at ways to tweek and improve policies that will reduce stormwater impacts, and in the process create some aesthetically beautiful viewscapes.

The map above identified 10 locations for us to consider as possible first project locations. Priority projects may include anything from removing asphalt and replacing with pervious pavement, to installing bioswales, infiltration ditches, pocket wetlands and other devices that capture, treat, and reduce stormwater runoff.

Big thanks to Duncan Hughes, SRWA and Jeremy Pirkle with the City of Clarkesville for getting this grant. Tetra Tech will provide the technical assistance with the project.

5) North Georgia Turf Farm property conversion to Mitigation Bank
Mitigation_Areas_Map_w_trail
An interesting project got underway last month: conversion of the North Georgia Turf sod farm along the Soque River in Clarkesville (just north of the bridge on 197) into a Mitigation Bank with restored streams, constructed wetlands and other features that should enhance the environmental benefit of the property. Project plans were begun by owners of North Georgia Turf about 3 or more years ago, and now are beginning to be implemented.

Mitigation banking is the preservation and restoration of wetlands, streams or other habitats in order to offset or compensate for adverse impacts in nearby ecosystems. The North Georgia Turf property applied to have mitigation credits available several years ago presumably to offset other projects (such as piping a section of stream etc.) in other areas of the Upper Chattahoochee River basin. As developers throughout North Georgia (including the state DOT) are required to have such mitigation offsets when they impact streams, they can purchase mitigation credits which will help to pay for the restoration of this property.

Though the details of this project are far too extensive for a short summary, one of the primary benefits of the mitigation program if all goes well is that straightlined drainage ditches on the property will be restored to meandering vegetated streams that should reduce runoff and sediment loads. In addition, the extensive wetlands to be constructed on the property (see map) will work as a sponge during extreme flooding events holding flood waters and reducing downstream impacts including streambank erosion and streambottom scour.

The project will take over a year to implement and is being constructed by Northstate, the same contracting firm that helped the SRWA build a natural channel design restoration way back in the summer of 2011.

Even though the SRWA isn't directly involved in the project we'll be watching with great interest due to the possible net benefits the project should provide after completion. The proposal also calls for walking trails that could be conjoined with the Clarkesville Greenways trail one day. The owners of the property Soque River Conservation LLC consists of North Georgia Turf owner Aaron McWhorter and former governor (and SOQUE ROAST 2011 special guest) Sonny Perdue. In discussions over the last several years they expressed interest in the properties potential tie ins to a continuous river trail system that one day could connect Clarkesville Elementary to Downtown Clarkesville via a hiking, biking trail along the Soque River.

6) Soque River Ramble - Saturday, October 25th (same day as our party!)
2014-SRR-Event-Graphic-Color-Graphic-082114
Come on out and enjoy one of Habersham's original run and walk races, and certainly the most scenic. Dale and Jean Holmes are once again hosting this outstanding 6K in the heart of the Soque Headwaters beginning and ending at Marlan Wilbank's farm just down Chimney Mountain Road behind the Batesville General Store. The event benefits the SRWA and our programs to protect and restore the Soque! You'll get to jog right along the river in the pristine headwaters of the Watershed. It's terrific!

The pre-registration deadline is OCTOBER 17th. After that registration increases from $20 to $25.

To register and for all the other great details check out the website. http://soqueriverramble.com

1) Help Mulch Trees at Level Grove Elementary - Monday, August 4th
comparison_7.28.14_1000
In preparation for the new school year starting a week from this FRIDAY, The SRWA and Level Grove Elementary School could use your help! Back in January we planted trees and spread mulch all over Level Grove in an effort to stop the erosion of soils and help to beautify the school grounds, making them more environmentally friendly and pleasing to the eye. The results are fantastic to see, but a little more needs to be done.

Next MONDAY, August 4th at 9am we could use some VOLUNTEERS to help us spread the abundant leaf and chipped wood mulch stockpiled by the city of Cornelia around all the young trees that we planted back in January. Such mulching will help the survival of trees by providing more moisture to the tree roots, increase the nutrients available to the trees, reduce erosion from the land, and increase water infiltration of rainfall. That's a lot of good things for a few hours of shoveling and raking.

To help out, bring a rake, shovel, gloves, wheelbarrow or truck if you have any of the above. We'll be trying to move mulch from several stockpiled locations to each tree and bare area across the school. There is lots and lots of ground to cover. So as many hands as we can get the better.

If you think you can make it please RSVP to soque@windstream.net. Let us know if you have a truck or wheelbarrow too so we can guess how many we need to loan.

Thanks for being a part of this great effort. More before and after photos can be found at

2) Consider Donating an Item to the SRWA
Even though the SRWA is well on its way to a full recovery from the Fire in March, every week we realize there is yet another item that we no longer have. Incredibly, probably 90% of our restocked office has come via donations from the community. It's made us realize that before we purchase anything we should always inquire to see if our supporters may have items they are getting rid of anyway that would be of great use to us. Take a look at our wish list and if you have other items that you think may be of use don't hesitate to offer them. These gifts have made a huge difference!

3) Soquee River Days Contest extended to END OF YEAR

POSTER_SOQUEE_DAYS_2014_JULY_29_2014

The last 3 months have been one of the best periods in SRWA's history of getting out and meeting new people, and discovering a wide array of people's experiences of the Soque Watershed that we've never encountered before.

This has been thanks in large part to our SOQUEE RIVER DAYS project (*yes that spelling is correct...check the blog site for an explanation) to collect submissions of people's experiences anywhere in the entire watershed basin. We've had over 15 submissions so far, and more are coming in every week.

Starting this week we'll be posting ALL submissions as they come in to our FACEBOOK page
as well as to our  Blog Site that already has all our submissions to date.

EVERYONE including YOU has a SOQUE STORY, PHOTO or ARTWORK to share so please don't be shy. We'd like to have at least 50 and closer to 100 submissions by the end of the year. Maybe you took a photo of a unique flower, or a turtle crossing the road. Perhaps you snuck up on a bear cub, or ate a slice of watermelon sitting on a rock. Any memory that you think helps represent your experience and your love of the Soque Watershed is a valid submission. For instance, when I hold Whiskey my dog over the top of a stream he begins to paddle his feet before he ever hits the water.

All Submissions will receive a free SOQUE RIVER MAP. We ask that you come by our office to pick those up. The best submissions will receive a cash prize and print of John Kollock's Soque River Days painting.

You may also enjoy reading about our Bike Journey across all the watersheds in the Soque. You can find these in the newspaper and on our Blog Site.

Check it out today and make a submission. At the completion we hope to produce a book that describes how our community experiences the Soque Watershed!

4) Welcome Scarlett Fuller as our Special Projects Assistant
We are thrilled to welcome back Scarlett Fuller (one of our most dynamic board members in recent years) back as our Special Projects Assistant at the SRWA.

Scarlett and her husband Nathan spent most of 2013-2014 in Montana but have returned to North Georgia to our good fortune. Scarlett will be helping the SRWA with our Soquee River Days project for the remainder of the year as well as mapping out many of the sub-basin features of the watershed helping to create an identity for every n00k and cranny of the Soque Watershed.

Please introduce yourself to her, and invite her out to see your part of the watershed. We want her to meet as many people as possible as she becomes an expert.

or 706-754-9382 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays

4) 2014 Georgia Mountains Farm Tour - Huge Success
Our Farm Tour for 2014 was a giant success. We had between 425 - 500 individuals attend the event this year which was essentially a doubling in size. The tour has rapidly become the dominant agritourism event for the Northeast Georgia Region drawing families from all over the state of Georgia to see what Local Food Farms look like here in our beautiful neck of the woods.

We should all be proud of the great FARMERS who make this event possible and the great culture and great food that they are producing. Plan on coming next year!

To help inspire you take a look at this great video by Andrew Linker.

5) Locally Grown Expansion to Gainesville - highest sales ever
And strongly related to the FARM TOUR event, the 40 or so farms and food producers with the Northeast Georgia Locally Grown online farmers market just expanded the market to a new location in Gainesville, GA on June 11th. The new pickup location is averaging over 20 customers per week and sales have essentially doubled from this time last year! Wow!

Looks like local food from sustainable mountain farms is popular and getting more popular.

To order some yourself check out the website.

Click image for PDF of POSTER - sponsors will be updated thru 5/30

We're excited to announce that in lieu of the PADDLE FESTIVAL this year (due to the fire and losing our Festival site we just aren't able to do it this year but we'll bring it back we promise) the SRWA is hosting a summer event in honor of artist John Kollock who has inspired several generations with his paintings of the natural world. The event is called "Soquee River Days", the title of one of John's greatest paintings (picture above). The project features a CONTEST to submit stories, artwork, poetry and photographs that depict people's experiences on the Soque River and her feeder streams. We'll then assemble the entire collection of photos, kids art, oral histories and more to be featured on a website, and the best of those bound into a book this fall which will also be titled Soquee River Days.

Since, the Soque River has touched the lives of every single resident and visitor to Habersham County in some way we want to honor two of our region's greatest treasures, John Kollock, and the Soque River, by capturing our community's experiences of people and the river then sharing these experiences and stories with one another.

From May 1st to July 31st submissions are encouraged in five categories
  1. Photos  - both current and historical
  2. Artwork - all forms from paintings to sculpture to wood carvings and more
  3. Stories - written or oral (we have an audio recorder)
  4. Poetry - you know what that is
  5. Kids Art - were really excited about this one and the sky is the limit (mashed potatoe sculpture of the watershed?)

Everyone who makes a submission will receive a free map of the Soque River and have their work posted on a website. In August, five winners, one in each category, will be selected by a panel and awarded $100 and a print of Mr. Kollock's "Soquee River Days." Dozens of submitted works will also be selected for publication in a hardbound book available to the public this fall. Submissions do not have to be new, they can be from long ago, or even by artists and individuals no longer with us. Helping to collect stories from others, such as family and friends is also encouraged.

During the three month contest SRWA staff will take a kayak and bicycle tour around the entire Soque Watershed, writing stories, interviewing people and taking photographs. The purpose of the tour is to demonstrate where the lands of the Soque Watershed are and the types of stories and people that help shape our understanding of the landscape. Nancy Kollock, John's wife, described how, "once you've had an experience of the river, you care more," and in that spirit new experiences interacting with the river this summer are encouraged.

The SRWA will begin collecting submissions during our OPEN HOUSE (see below) at our new offices located at 1387 Washington Street, across the street from Habersham Community Theatre on Saturday May 17th, during the Mountain Laurel Festival, 9am to 3pm. Those with photographs or other works you'd like to submit are encouraged to bring them to be scanned that day and to receive a free map. Submissions will also be accepted on a continuous basis through July 31st.

Since the event is more about sharing experiences with one another, than about winning a contest, all submissions great and small are encouraged. "A few years ago elementary age students drew pictures of colorful signs that read "You are now entering the Soque River Watershed," says Ellis. "We put those signs up all along the foyer of our old office to inspire people. Even though those little treasures were lost in the Clarkesville downtown fire in March, we're certain that the treasures that people still have in their attics, in their minds and hearts, in their family histories and in their passion to get out there and explore can build an incredible legacy for this River that we'll all be proud we helped create. It's a chance for each of us to become a part of Habersham history."

More details on the contest, the book, the blog and the tour will be posted regularly  at our website www.soque.org, or e-mail soque@windstream.net or call 706-754-9382.

2) Sponsor one of our SUMMER EVENTS - deadlines 5/14 and 5/30
One of the best ways to support the SRWA and our community projects is to sponsor one of our summer events. In year's past we've had close to 30 sponsors. This year we expect even more people to be involved in the SOQUEE RIVER DAYS event described above and the 3rd Annual Georgia Mountains Farm Tour (tickets on sale now by clicking link).

Here's the details for sponsorship categories and benefits (especially if you're a business looking for community marketing opportunities).

Huge thanks to our first 4 sponsors - Springer Mountain Farms, Habersham Chamber of Commerce, Oliver and Weidner Attorneys and Regions Bank!

3) Courthouse Stormwater TOUR & Soque Partnership meeting - May 15th
Judicial_Center_TOUR_FLIER

We're hosting an educational tour of the stormwater features built at the new Habersham County courthouse on Thursday, May 15th at 6pm. The tour will talk about how stormwater damages streams and how these structures are designed to reduce the volume and impacts of stormwater. After the tour we'll go inside the courthouse for a tour of this new facility and an update of Soque Partnership Projects planned for the Hazel Creek Watershed over the next year and half.

Please attend. Guaranteed to be very educational and great opportunity to get to know the NEW COURTHOUSE!

5) Rocky Branch stream restoration project COMPLETED
Once again we get the very nice reward of an awesome BEFORE AND AFTER photo following our stream restoration of a section of Rocky Branch on the Clarkesville Greenway.

This project was a giant collaborative between the City of Clarkesville including Jeremy Pirkle, Chris Yearwood, Stephen Roberts, and Tim Durham, the SRWA (especially Duncan Hughes who coordinated the whole project), our engineer Jason Zink of Zink Environmental in Asheville, NC, and John Yearwood who did all the grading (a man with a steady hand) and Mark Alley who helped with material delivery. There were many, many others who assisted giving everything from  advice on grass seed to permits, etc., etc.

If you'd like to see what a natural channel design restoration looks like take a walk on the Clarkesville Greenway (try not to trample it too bad though) and read our new publication on streambank management. Download the brochure here

Rocky_Branch_BOTH

We'll have a slide show of the whole project soon to give you an idea of how dramatically this bank was changed.

Again huge thanks for all who made this project possible!

1) Camp Creek Reservoir Clean Up Tomorrow - April 26th - 9AM
The SRWA is teaming up with the City of Cornelia in tomorrow's annual Great American Clean-Up. We'd love your assistance as we help to clean litter and trash from around Cornelia's drinking water reservoir and a vital tributary to the Soque River, upper Camp Creek. If you haven't seen this area before, the lake is quite beautiful and the dip (formerly known as the Mt. Airy Carwash) is a rare and interesting feature to experience.

We'll get started at 9am on Wilson Road, near the lake. Directions are drive to the Dairy Queen in Cornelia and turn onto Camp Creek Road. Wilson Road is about 1.5 miles on the right (just past the water treatment plant). We'll have garbage bags and probably rubber gloves (but bring 'em if you got 'em). Thanks for your help.

2) Office Donations to the SRWA have poured in
The last month and a half has reminded us what a great community we live in. After the fire on March 5th we have received dozens upon dozens of donations of office supplies, furniture, artwork, and other items to rebuild a new office. The outpouring has been truly amazing. Everything you see in these photos has been donated.

Even though we are still sad about the loss of our very loved office, we are slowly rebuilding what may in many ways be an even better office. We haven't had time to compile the names of everyone who has donated a gift but will do that very soon to show our extreme appreciation. We are probably close to 80% towards having a complete and functioal office. We thought we'd list just a few final items we still need that you may have laying around.
  • broom
  • foot mats (at entrance)
  • digital camera (camera bag)
  • office phones (the ones we have are on loan)
  • table cloths (any colors)
  • plastic tubs or containers with lids (for storage)
  • fire extinquisher (seems funny I know)
  • smoke alarm (yep, this too)
  • kitchen dish soap / sponges
  • Cashbox (preferably with lock)
  • Any software (for MAC or WINDOWS)
  • Laserpointer
  • double AA triple AAA batteries (rechargable are ideal)
  • thumbdrives other external harddrives
  • river artwork
  • small table (to put a print on)
  • rubbermaid folding tables
  • display board
We cannot give enough thanks to those who have helped us get back on our feet!

3) Clarkesville Greenway Expansion moving forward this summer

Mary_Street_GREENWAY_2

We're inching closer and closer to breaking ground on the Phase II expansion of the Clarkesville Greenway into Mary Street Park. Click on the above image to see a blown up version of the map. Once completed this extension will become the new primary entrance to the GREENWAY with plenty of parking located at the Old Lions Club building parking lot. Other features will include better handicap access, including access to bathrooms and picnic tables. The expansion will add one half mile to the existing 1 mile of trail.

You can also see a related news story from the Northeast Georgian.

4) Rocky Branch stream restoration project - May 5th
Restoration of eroding streambanks is a challenging but important aspect of the work of the SRWA and our Soque Partnership. Often preventing problems before they occur is the absolute best solution, but when absolutely necessary a full-blown restoration project is in order. That is the case on this lower section of Rocky Branch located on the existing  Clarkesville Greenway as can be seen clearly in this photo.

Rocky_Branch_Erosion_2 2

Construction of this project will begin on May 5th and we'll have a workshop at a later date to discuss our approach and recommendations for stream restoration.

If you'd like more information on STREAMSIDE MANAGEMENT we are working on a brand new publication that is in DRAFT form now that we hope may help landowners protect their property and streams for the benefit of all. Download the brochure here

5) Courthouse Stormwater Workshop and Soque Partnership meeting - May 15th

We'll be hosting an educational tour of the stormwater features built at the new Habersham County courthouse on Thursday, May 15th at 6pm. The tour will talk about how stormwater damages streams and how these structures are designed to reduce the volume and impacts of stormwater. After the tour we'll go inside the courthouse for a quick update of Soque Partnership Projects planned for the Hazel Creek Watershed over the next year and half.
6) SRWA Office OPEN HOUSE - during Mountain Laurel Festival - May 17th
We'd love to welcome the enitre community to come by our office in just 3 weeks during the Mountain Laurel Festival on Saturday May 17th to see where we're located, enjoy some snacks, and most of all to hear about a new very exciting project that we are launching this spring and summer. We'll be doing a press release before the event announcing the project, so scoot up to the edge of your seat with anticipation. We think you'll be as excited about it as we are. Hope to see you soon at 1387 Washington Street. We'll have signs by then!

Locally Grown kicks off just before EASTER

The Locally Grown online farmers market kicks off it's regular season next week with ordering beginning on April 18th. But don't wait until then. The market is open today, Sunday, April 13th until 9PM and we have tons of local pasture raised eggs just in time for EASTER. The pickup is still on Wednesdays either at Grace Calvary Church's carport in Clarkesville (one block past the library) or at Mill Gap Farm in Tiger, GA from 5-7 PM every Wednesday.

The market is growing. Starting June 6th we'll be expanding to Gainseville.

If you'd like to be a customer, you can open an account and place an order at http://northeastgeorgia.locallygrown.net/welcome

If you'd like to help local farmers by being a volunteer for Locally Grown send Justin an e-mail at soque@windstream.net.

Print out this brochure and share with your friends.
